Herrmann, Morton William, 77, of Indian Wells, CA, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 30, 2008. The only child of Morton John and Edith Eva (Read) Herrmann, Mort was born October 24, 1930 in Long Beach, CA. Milestones of Morts youth include playing semi-professional baseball for Kansas City, serving in the Air Force, and owning racehorses. Mort was a true entrepreneur, founding and operating seven companies in his lifetime. During the mid-1970s, Mort had built the third largest landscaping business in the country. The company, Landscape Specialists, constructed golf courses at Mauna Kea, Incline Village, Spyglass, Mission Viejo and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The company landscaped portions of Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Caesars Palace and other landmarks. Mort won a national landscaping award presented by former First Lady, Rosalynn Carter, for the Fashion Island landscaping in 1977. Mort also landscaped the Rossmore Leisure World retirement communities. Other notable business achievements include Morts development of the first plastic above-ground pipe to not break down in sun exposure. He was also a pioneer in green waste recycling, long before it became prevalent. He even owned and mined an Alaskan gold mine as well as a 200-acre RV park. Mort loved hunting, fishing, golfing and body surfing, and enjoyed spending time at his second home on Catalina Island. Mort is survived by his wife, Bobbi of Indian Wells, CA; his daughter and son-in-law, Caryn and Al Burnham of Trabuco Canyon, CA; his son and daughter-in-law, Dirk and Melissa Herrmann of Vista, CA; stepsons Jack Velte of Bucks County, PA, and Tom and Janet Velte of Oceanside, CA; stepdaughter Pam Capagli and husband, Richard of Bigfork, MT; stepson Don Byram and wife Anh of Milpitas, CA; 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mort was known for being adventuresome and gregarious, and was well-loved by those who knew him. A celebration of Morts life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at Capo Beach Calvary, 25975 Domingo, Capistrano Beach. |
