Russell Dworian, 73, died Aug. 14, 2008, at Providence Extended Care Center after an 18-month battle with melanoma. He was a Tucson resident who summered in Alaska.
A viewing will be 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church, with burial afterward at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.
Russell was born April 24, 1935, in Drohobych, Ukraine, and after displacement during World War II, emigrated with his parents and sister to the United States in 1948. He was a proud American, his family wrote, and served in the U.S. Army and Air Force Reserves.
His early career was in the missile and space industry. Russell became an independent automotive tool sales representative, then created his own successful transmission refurbishment business in Fresno, Calif. After selling his business, he and his wife retired to Tucson in 2005.
Russell is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Nadine; daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Scotty Auton of Eagle River; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Laurie Dworian; and granddaughters, Helena, Margaret and Nadia Dworian, all of Anchorage; sister, Natalie Sponsler and her husband Fred and family; cousin, Daniel Lucky, his wife Ellen and family; and in-laws, Roman Slocki, Bohdan Slocki, his wife Pat and family; Myroslav Slocki, his wife Donna and family; Vera Mitchell, her husband Ted; and Andrea Slocki.
His family wishes to thank the Eagle River Fire Department paramedic team, Providence oncology, radiation, and emergency room doctors, nurses and aides, Dr. Dale Webb, and the caring staff at Providence Alaska Medical Center and Providence Extended Care Center. Your expertise and compassion during this difficult time will never be forgotten, his family wrote.
During his last years, Russell was a driving force in helping fellow parishioners acquire a new church building for St. Michaels Catholic Church in Tucson. In lieu of flowers, his final request was that donations be sent to St. Michaels Building Fund, c/o. Ivars Vecsbastiks, 1587 W. Baltusrol Drive, Green Valley, AZ 85614. |
