Couch racing seems to be among the most popular sports right now- whether their furniture is amped up with motors or it is a regular chair or couch. These pieces of furniture serve as a means of transportation down a rather steep dirt hill. The object of the game is this: whoever (or whatever team) can remain in their couch the longest without falling off is the winner! Or sometimes the winner is whoever does stay in their furniture wins. With recent youtube.com footage couch racing has become extremely popular. Oftentimes the passengers are thrown at of the couch when they hit a rocky spot on the dirt hill. The couch then proceeds to roll over and over sometimes crushing the passengers beneath its weight. For the most part nobody gets seriously hurts except for a few scratches bruises and broken bones. If you decide you would like to engage in this new-age sport many are finding that adding electric components to their furniture is the more- fun route. "It was a fun weekend. None of the furniture or carts moved slower than 15 mph. I think my chair could go about 20 mph and would do a wheelie from the starting line to the first corner. The drive motors had extremely high starting torque. My chair used two starter motors. These are series wound motors so they provide the high torque that you desire for drive motors. I estimate the output speed is probably 2000 rpm. I then reduced this using a 3:1 gear reduction. I had a 12 and a 35 tooth sprocket driving 10 inch wheels. Never did the math but it worked pretty good. In the front of the chair I used one deep-cycle battery. I am sure I had major voltage drop driving two motors but this kind of cusioned the blow when you hit the triggers. Since this was a slap together hurry up job I didnt have speed control. The motors were on off using a golf cart solenoid. Dont use a car solenoid unless you have a death wish!" Despite the likely safety risk of couch racing many famliies are engaging in this sport as well; a couch can hold up to six people! Keep in mind that couch racing although fun and exciting as it is is a dangerous sport.
